Here we go!

Hello Pikum! fans:

The past few months, we have been busy listening to your feedback, and making significant improvements to the product. When we launched in May, a lot of features weren't finished quite the way we wanted to, but we felt it was important to get the initial version of Pikum! out and into your hands, so that we could hear from you, and learn from your feedback. We have done that, and have made significant upgrades that are now starting to roll out:

- A new and simplified signup process

- A way of combining challenges with invites, so that you can challenge and invite friends in one smooth process

- Aggregate Pikums, which our affiliate partners have patiently been waiting for

- Many, many user flow improvements

All of these initiatives are designed to make your Pikum! experience a better and more enjoyable one. We hope you will like what you see, but please continue to let us know how we can improve.

We have timed these upgrades to coincide with the kickoff of the Olympics in Beijing this week, and with the season start for EPL middle of the month. EPL is huge for us, and it was important to get all the changes implemented before its 2008/9 start.

Our inventory has grown tremendously since May. We now cover Football, Cricket, Rugby, Formula One, Baseball, American Football, MMA/UFC, many other sports, and a variety of non-sports verticals. In fact, our coverage of Olympic sports is superior to any other sports betting operator in the UK market, and the level of detailed Piks we offer (over a hundred in Football alone) is unprecedented. There truly is no limit to creating Pikums that match your and your friends' interests.

We have also very deliberately held back on marketing-spend in June and July as we were refining our product and taking in the lessons from launch. Now that we are ready, we are going to push as hard as we can, and you will see some very cool promotions, advertising and PR happening over the next two months. Please help us spread the word by inviting and challenging your friends, and please keep your feedback and thoughts coming.

Pikum! in Cape Town

clock May 23, 2008 11:19 by author johannes

Here's our South African Team. What a great crew!

We handle all customer ops, editorial, engineering, QA, finance and admin from Cape Town, and have assembled a great team with lots of relevant experience. For now, we are 15 people down there, and we are continuing to grow. If you know great .net and C# engineers in Cape Town (or wanting to move to one of the most beautiful cities in the world and work for an exciting web 2.0 company), drop us a line.

Next Week's Priorities

clock May 2, 2008 12:54 by author johannes

Yeah, we know, lots of things to fix on the site - Thanks for all the feedback, it's been constructive and encouraging, and it feels great to have a responsive audience.  Please keep the ideas and suggestions for how to improve Pikum! coming as well.

It's going to be a busy weekend here at Pikum! Besides fixing bugs, enhancing functionality, implementing the new design (awesome - thank you Derek!), pushing code updates, and responding to user input; we are also going to have a nice number of Pikums happening this weekend in the world of Rugby and Football/Soccer. This means work for our Cape Town Operations Team, and Sasha and her team will be busy making sure that datafeeds are functioning properly, scoring works, and incoming CS queries get addressed. Well, at least the office's got ocean views!

Next week's going to see us lifting the veil on Pikum! a bit more. We haven't actually done anything yet to promote our launch, for reasons Sean and I have explained in our previous posts. So you'll see a proper press release, a promotional event in London, our first set of baby-steps on the affiliate front (Araz is jumping up and down with excitement already), more celebrity Pikums and a bunch of other stuff to help spread the word.

We will also continue product fixes and improvements. Our product has so much functionality, and is highly automated/integrated with data sources, payment processors, anti-fraud and anti-money laundering services; plus it is computationally quite complex; and so it comes as no surprise that not everything was perfect when we pushed the trigger yesterday. This is compounded by cross-browser issues (Emily had a hard time registering on her Mac yesterday - talk about a poor experience!) and new design still being updated in many of the product's pages - and you got quite the challenge (no pun intended). But we will get there, the team is working on it systematically and with a clear framework to prioritize the hundreds of known bugs and issues.

So now the big question is - who will be the first real-money Pikum winner? Can't wait to congratulate the lucky one.

Happy Piking, and pls stay tuned for more Pikum! news

Live at Last!

clock May 1, 2008 16:28 by author johannes

Today we launched Pikum!.

It was a quiet affair. No press release was issued, no launch event was held, no champagne bottles were uncorked. No, it's not that we don't know how to throw a party - all that will follow soon. For now, we chose to go live in private (invite only) Beta. As Sean points out in his earlier post, there are still some minor product issues to be ironed out, and the team continues to work hard on these. But our core processes (registering, deposting, playing, creating, scoring, withdrawing) are all stable (for the most part), and the appx. 100 people who signed up in the first few hours have already started to have some fun with Pikum! (I am afraid to say, Bayern Munich's loss to St. Petersburg was a major embarassment to me, and I did really poorly in my first hosted Pikum).

But actually, I thought Day 1 would be a lot worse, and I am pleasantly surprised by how smoothly things have gone.

It feels great to finally be live after more than a year of engineering, planning, complex legal and structural maneuvering, fundraising, licensing, etc. - seriously, if we had known how challenging it is to launch a brand new betting company in a heavily regulated industry, we might never have embarked on the journey. But here we are.

The scope of this launch is limited in several ways.

1) We are only allowing real-money play in the U.K. (other markets may follow, provided we can clear the regulatory and legal hurdles). Anyone anywhere can play for Pikles (delicious!) of course, but sorry, hard cash can only be transacted on U.K. soil for now.

2) We only cover soccer/football and rugby for now (Formula One, Cricket, the big U.S. sports, and even some early non-sports verticals will follow over the summer).

3) We only have a limited number of celebrity hosts (but the ones we have are great - Richard Branson and Helen Chamberlain), and

4) Right now there's only a fairly small inventory of Pikums.

But the idea of Pikum! has never been to push content on our audience in old-media / old-betting style. Pikum! is about democratization and socialization of entertainment through user-generated betting, and the Company's primary role is to provide all the sportsnuts out there the best possible platform to create and play the most fun prediction games available anywhere. We believe, based on the early reaction we got in Alpha and the market research we have done, that our game, while new, is extremely entertaining, competitive, and viral to the max. Based on that, we believe we will see significant uptake and repeat play, and the U.K. is the battleground we have chosen for conducting this experiment. We will see how it goes.

As the first day of Pikum!'s newly live status draws to a close, I am extremely proud of our small, yet global team. The 20 or so of us who make up Pikum! coped well with the challenges associated with building a truly multinational startup from scratch: how Logan and the tech team spread across three difft timezones manages to deal with all the time-difference issues and resulting sleep deprivation is beyond me; the various hurdles we had to climb on the legal and regulatory front seemed unsurmountable at times (we are now operating a fully licensed and completely legal online betting business, which for many months seemed an unachievable goal given our roots in the U.S.); the lack of funding when Series Seed funds were running dry and Series A money had not yet come in was a little scary for some of us; the sucky Skype conference calls across the globe at ungodly hours of the day/night drove us nuts; the unbelievably small, expensive and insufficient office space in London at times seemed to suffocate Per, Araz and Sean's marketing savvy; and the few delays we have had along the line annoyed us beyond belief. But despite these now forgotten challenges, the team developed a real passion for what we are trying to do with Pikum! along the way, and while our mission may not be as important as finding a cure for cancer or enabling mankind's journey into space (Sir R and the guys at Virgin Galactic are working on the latter, though Cool), the whole team feels we are contributing our part by providing real innovation by virtue of a superior customer experience in an industry that has not seen real change in years. So my hat is off to our team and its accomplishments.

Thanks for your interest, and pls stay tuned for more updates.
